Calling and Emergencies

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water you can’t stop, a sewer backup coming into the house, no water at all, or a water heater leaking heavily. A slow drain, a dripping faucet, or a running toilet can usually wait for a normal visit. Not sure? Here’s how to tell if you need an emergency plumber, or just call and we’ll tell you honestly.

Do you take emergency calls at night and on weekends?

Yes. We take calls 24/7, day and night, including weekends and holidays. Call +1 641 200 6003, tell us what’s happening, and we’ll tell you what to do right now and when we can get there.

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve. Open the lowest faucet in the house to drain pressure off the pipes. Kill power to anything sitting in standing water, but only if you can reach the breaker safely. Take photos for your insurance company, then call us.

Where is my main water shutoff?

In most Ottumwa homes with a basement, it’s on the wall where the water line comes through the foundation, near the water meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Check today that it turns, because old gate valves can seize after years of sitting.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away. Don’t flip switches or use your phone inside. Once you’re outside, call your gas utility or 911. After the gas company has made it safe, call us for any plumbing or gas line repair.

Should I try to fix it myself first?

Stopping the damage is fine: shut off water, stop using drains, mop up. Beyond that, call before you start taking things apart. A wrench in the wrong place can turn a small repair into a big one, especially on old galvanized or cast-iron pipe.

Cost and Payment

How much does a plumber cost in Ottumwa?

It depends on the cause, the access, and the time of day. Hourly rates, call-out fees, and job prices all vary, which is why we find the cause first and give you the price before work starts. For national ranges and what moves the price, read how much a plumber costs in Ottumwa.

Do you charge just to come out?

If there’s a charge to come out, we tell you on the phone before anyone drives over. You’ll never find out about it from the invoice.

Will I know the price before you start?

Yes. You get the price and your options, repair or replace and what’s urgent versus what can wait, before any work begins. If we find something unexpected, we stop, show you, and price it before going any further.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

For simple jobs we can usually give you an idea on the call. A firm price comes after we’ve found the cause, because quoting before diagnosing is how people end up paying twice.

Why do nights and weekends sometimes cost more?

Plumbers commonly charge higher rates for after-hours calls, because it means pulling someone away from home. If your call falls into that, we tell you up front, on the phone.

Will homeowners insurance cover a plumbing problem?

Sometimes. Sudden, accidental water damage, like a burst pipe, is often covered, while slow leaks and sewer or drain backups often are not unless you have extra coverage. Read your policy or ask your agent, and take photos before you clean up. We leave you photos and a clear invoice.

Drains and Sewers

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Usually because the clog was cleared but the cause wasn’t found. Roots in a clay joint, a sagging section of pipe, or grease buildup all bring a clog back in weeks. A sewer camera shows which one it is, so the fix lasts.

What does a sewer camera inspection show?

The inside of your sewer line, live on a screen. We look for tree roots, a belly (a low sag where water sits), cracked or offset sections, grease, and whether the problem is in your line or the city sewer. You watch it with us.

Is my sewer backup my problem or the city’s?

A backup that happens only during heavy rain often points to the city sewer, especially in older parts of Ottumwa that still have combined sewers. One that happens anytime usually points to your own line. A camera inspection settles it.

What is hydro jetting and when do I need it?

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of a pipe, clearing grease, scale, and roots a snake can’t fully remove. It’s worth considering for recurring main-line clogs. We look with the camera first to see whether it’s the right tool.

What shouldn’t go down my drains?

Cooking grease, “flushable” wipes, paper towels, feminine products, and anything that doesn’t dissolve like toilet paper. Grease cools and sticks to pipe walls, and wipes don’t break down. Both are among the most common causes of backups we see.

How do I know if tree roots are in my sewer line?

Warning signs include slow drains throughout the house, gurgling toilets, and clogs that keep coming back. Roots love old clay pipe joints. Only a camera can confirm it, and it also shows how bad it is before anyone talks about digging.

Water Heaters

How long does a water heater last?

A tank water heater often lasts around 8 to 12 years, and tankless models commonly last longer. Hard water, sediment, and a neglected tank shorten that. If yours is near the end of that range and starts leaking, replacement usually makes more sense than repair.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

Repair makes sense for a newer unit with a simple fault, like a heating element, thermostat, or pilot problem. Replacement makes sense for an older unit, a leaking tank, or repeated repairs. We tell you honestly which one it is and show you what we found.

Why do I have no hot water?

On an electric heater, the cause is often a tripped breaker, a failed heating element, or a bad thermostat. On a gas unit, it may be a pilot or thermocouple problem. If the tank is leaking, shut off the water to it and call us.

Why is my water heater popping or rumbling?

That’s usually sediment on the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under it boils and pops. Sometimes a flush clears it. If the tank is old, the noise can be a sign it’s near the end.

Should I get a tank or a tankless water heater?

Tank heaters cost less up front and are simpler to service. Tankless units cost more to install but heat water on demand and take up less room. The right choice depends on your household size, your gas or electric setup, and your budget. Call and we’ll talk it through.

Leaks, Pipes, and Freezing

How can I find a hidden leak?

Turn off every faucet and appliance, then look at your water meter. If the dial or the low-flow indicator is still moving, water is leaking somewhere. Common culprits are a running toilet, a hidden pipe leak, or a leak on the line from the street.

Why did my water bill jump?

The usual causes are a toilet that runs, a leak in a wall or under a slab, or a leak on the service line outside. Run the meter test above, and check the yard for wet or unusually green spots. Call if the meter keeps moving.

What should I do if my pipes freeze?

Open the faucet so water can flow as the ice melts, and thaw the pipe gently with warm air, like a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If a pipe has already split, shut off the main water valve and call us right away.

How do I keep pipes from freezing in an Ottumwa winter?

January lows in Ottumwa average around 13°F, so prepare early. Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, insulate pipes in crawlspaces and exterior walls, open cabinet doors under sinks on cold nights, and let a faucet drip when it’s very cold.

Does old galvanized pipe need to be replaced?

Eventually, yes. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, which lowers pressure and can cause rust-colored water or leaks. The typical Ottumwa home was built around 1955, so many have it. We’ll look at yours and tell you whether it can wait.

What causes low water pressure?

Common causes are corroded galvanized pipe, a partly closed valve, a failing pressure regulator, a leak, or buildup in a fixture. If it’s only one faucet, it’s usually the fixture. If it’s the whole house, call, and we’ll find the cause.

Ottumwa Rules and Licensing

Who owns the water line, me or the city?

In Ottumwa, the homeowner owns the service line from the water main to the house, including the curb stop. The city owns the main. Not sure where your responsibility starts? Read who owns the water line in Ottumwa.

What is an Ottumwa Water Works leak notice?

It’s a notice that the Water Works found a leak on your service line. You have to hire a bonded, licensed contractor within 48 hours, and a lead or galvanized line has to be replaced in full. Call the day it arrives. Here’s what to do about a leak notice.

Do I need a permit for plumbing work in Ottumwa?

Many jobs do. Under Ottumwa City Code Chapter 27, only a state-licensed master plumber can pull a plumbing permit in the city. When your job needs one, we pull it and schedule the required inspection.

How do I check a plumber’s license in Iowa?

Iowa licenses plumbers under Iowa Code Chapter 105, and you can verify a license through the state. Ask for the name and license on the paperwork, then check that it matches. Ours is available on request, and here’s how to verify an Iowa plumbing license.

Do you call 811 before digging?

Yes. Before any sewer or water line dig, Iowa law requires a call to Iowa One Call (811) at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. We make the call and build it into the plan.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We are licensed and insured, and proof of coverage and our license are available on request. We never ask you to take our word for it.

Sump Pumps, Septic and Rural Plumbing

Why does my sump pump run constantly?

It could be a high water table, heavy rain, or snowmelt, or a stuck float switch or a failing check valve. Near the Des Moines River, groundwater runs high in wet seasons. If it never shuts off, call before it burns out.

When should I test my sump pump?

Before spring thaw and before heavy-rain season. Pour water into the pit until the float rises. The pump should start, empty the pit, and shut off. If it doesn’t, replace or repair it now, not when the basement is flooding.

Do I need a septic inspection to sell my house?

In Iowa, a home on a septic system generally needs a time-of-transfer inspection by a DNR-certified inspector before the sale. Plan for it early, because any repair it finds can delay closing.

Do you work on private wells?

We handle the plumbing side of a well system, like pressure tank connections, yard hydrants, and the lines into the house. For well drilling or a pump swap, call and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s our job.

Do you serve areas outside Ottumwa?

Yes. We serve Ottumwa and 33 ZIP codes across southeast Iowa. See our full plumbing service area, or call and give us your town.

Find Your Shutoff Before You Need It

The worst time to look for the main valve is while water is spraying. Find it today, make sure it turns, and show everyone in the house where it is.

If it won’t turn, don’t force it. A seized valve is a small repair now and a big problem during a burst pipe.
